Convicted fraudster Invictus Obi released from US prison

The Nigerian entrepreneur widely known as Invictus Obi and sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud in the United States, Obinwanne Okeke, has been released from custody.

A check on the website of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) shows that Okeke was no longer incarcerated as of Wednesday, December 23, 2025.

The record states that Okeke was “Not in BOP Custody as of: 12/23/2025”.

In February 2021, Okeke received a 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges related to an $11 million fraud scheme.

Based on the original judgment, the Nigerian entrepreneur was expected to remain in custody until September 3, 2028.

However, TheCable could not independently verify the full details surrounding his release, as it remains unclear whether the sentence was reduced or converted to supervised release or another form of reprieve.

The possibility that Okeke was transferred to a state facility is unlikely, given that his conviction was for federal offences.

Background

Okeke was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2019 at Dulles International Airport while attempting to leave the United States, following investigations into an $11 million internet fraud.

He and his accomplices were involved in a business email compromise scheme that targeted Unatrac Holding Limited, the export sales office for Caterpillar heavy industrial and agricultural equipment.

In April 2018, a Unatrac executive reportedly fell victim to a phishing email, enabling the conspirators to obtain login credentials. They subsequently issued fraudulent wire transfer requests using forged invoices.

Before his conviction, Okeke was listed by Forbes as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans.
