Court denies fresh bail request by Tukur Mamu

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has dismissed a new bail application filed by detained alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.

In his ruling on Wednesday, Justice Umar acknowledged Mamu’s health complaints but directed the Department of State Services (DSS) not to release him. Instead, he ordered that Mamu be taken to a suitable medical facility for proper treatment.

The judge observed that the prosecution had shown diligence in handling the case, adding that this eliminated one of the key grounds for granting bail — lack of prosecutorial diligence.

“Since the prosecution has been diligent in this case, the application for bail cannot be granted,” Justice Umar stated.

He further instructed Mamu’s defence counsel to select a medical facility acceptable to the defendant, to which he should be taken without delay.

Additionally, the court directed the DSS to grant Mamu access to his family members while in custody.
