Cross River gov cancels marathon over insecurity

The Cross River State Government has called off the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon over rising security concerns nationwide.

Governor Bassey Otu disclosed the decision on Thursday through a post on his X handle, stating that a thorough assessment of the current security climate led to the cancellation in order to safeguard participants, spectators, and the general public.

He wrote, “After a careful review of the prevailing security situation across the country, I have directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon.

“This decision was not an easy one, especially considering the passion, planning, and anticipation that this event inspires every year. However, the safety of our people, our athletes, and our visitors must always come first.

“I sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause to organisers, partners, and participants. Please be assured that future editions will return stronger, safer, and better organised, with the full support and attention of the state government.”

Otu reiterated the state’s commitment to promoting Cross River as a destination of peace, beauty, and excellence, emphasising that responsible decisions are necessary to protect lives while showcasing the state on the global stage.

“Thank you for your understanding and continued support,” the governor added.

The marathon, now in its second edition, was scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the scenic Agbokim Waterfalls in Etung Local Government Area.

Billed as a 42km eco-tourism race, it aimed to attract athletes, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

The cancellation comes against the backdrop of escalating violence and insecurity in Nigeria.

Recent incidents include an attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, where gunmen killed at least two worshippers and abducted the pastor and several congregants during an evening service on November 18.
