Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has welcomed the conviction of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, insisting that sponsors of terrorism will be held accountable wherever they are.
The Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti, Finland, sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism offences linked to his campaign to re-establish an independent Biafra state, which briefly existed in the late 1960s.
In a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, General Musa described the ruling as a landmark victory in the global fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
He said the judgment reaffirmed that no individual or group sponsoring terrorism against Nigeria would find refuge. “Those who incite violence and fund terrorism will be held accountable, regardless of their location,” he stated.
Musa commended Nigerian security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies, as well as the country’s diplomats, for providing the evidence that aided Ekpa’s conviction. He stressed that the outcome demonstrated the strength of international cooperation in addressing transnational threats.
The Defence Chief reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to working with global partners to dismantle terrorist networks. He also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and support ongoing security operations against insurgency and separatist violence.
