Diphtheria outbreak kills 10 children in Niger

At least 10 children have died in Niger State following a fresh outbreak of diphtheria in the Agaie and Bida local government areas.

The victims, who were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Bida, succumbed to complications despite medical efforts. Local sources said more deaths had occurred in rural communities, though the figures remain unconfirmed.

The development has stirred panic among residents, who are calling for urgent government intervention. A Bida resident, speaking anonymously, appealed for immediate supplies of vaccines and drugs to halt the spread.

“This is a matter of life and death. We urge the state government to urgently provide drugs to Bida and Agaie general hospitals to curb the spread,” the resident said.

Confirming the outbreak, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Health Care, Mohammed Gana, said the government had activated emergency response measures with the support of health partners. He noted that medication, surveillance, and containment strategies were being strengthened.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection of the throat and airways, releases toxins that can damage the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Without treatment, it can be fatal, particularly in children.

Authorities urged parents to ensure their children complete the full course of diphtheria vaccines and advised the public to report suspected cases immediately to nearby health facilities.
