A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George, has decried the police occupation of the party’s secretariat in Abuja, which disrupted the scheduled National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) meetings on Monday.
Addressing reporters after being denied access to the secretariat alongside other members of the PDP National Working Committee, George cautioned the Federal Government against actions that could push the nation into a state of crisis.
He said, “It’s strikingly annoying. This is our property. Was there any court order to say we will not hold our meeting in our office? What is going on? I was a young man in 1962 when it all started in the South West. we must avoid that madness. What is it? Can’t we sit and talk? What is the essence of democracy?
“Nigerians are watching, you came to our office, surrounded by police because we want to have a meeting? You want to turn us to North Korea or turn this country to Russia? We will not allow it, Nigerians will not allow it.”
George affirmed that the scheduled meeting would proceed as planned but refrained from revealing its location.
Reports state that armed police officers had taken control of Wadata Plaza, the PDP’s headquarters in Abuja, on Monday morning. This occurred amid rising tensions surrounding the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for the day.
The police reportedly barred members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from entering the secretariat.
