Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced an amnesty programme targeting cultists and individuals in possession of illegal firearms.
The governor made this known on Tuesday during a meeting with leaders of Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba communities in Benin City, where discussions focused on land disputes and security challenges.
According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo urged those involved in cult-related activities and illegal arms possession to turn themselves in and embrace the opportunity for amnesty.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the development of a proposed new city that encompasses these communities, he revealed that a technical committee would soon be established to oversee the rehabilitation and reintegration of cult members and at-risk youths, as part of efforts to curb violent crimes such as kidnapping.
The amnesty initiative, he noted, will include skills acquisition and empowerment programmes aimed at helping beneficiaries become productive members of society.
Governor Okpebholo also pledged continued support for lasting peace and development in the affected communities as the new city project advances.
He added that the government is open to hearing from individuals affected by demolitions carried out by the previous administration, encouraging them to approach the Committee on Land Resolution with their relevant documents.
Regarding the development of LOT ‘A’ in the new city master plan, he assured that traditional sites would be preserved. He also invited residents in LOT ‘B’ to submit their documents when the process begins, with plans underway for the regularization of land ownership in the area.
The governor urged all property owners across the state to register their lands with the Edo Geographical Information System (Edo GIS).
“Survey your land and register it with Edo GIS so that you can collect your land titles,” he advised.
In response, the community leaders pledged their full support for the government’s initiatives, particularly the development of LOT ‘A’ and the efforts to enhance security in their communities.
