Edo targets job creation, hospitality growth through tourism

The Edo State Government has announced plans to unlock the economic potential of its tourism sector by developing dozens of attractions across the state, with the aim of creating jobs, strengthening the hospitality industry and increasing revenue generation.

Director-General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Mrs Vivian Elabor, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the upcoming Edo Tourism Summit and Fashion Show slated for June 29 and 30 in Benin City.

She said the state is blessed with 72 tourism assets, including the Benin Moat, Ososo Carnival, Kukuruku Hills and several cultural festivals, which could serve as catalysts for economic development if properly managed.

According to Elabor, “The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is ready to explore the existing 72 tourism assets in the state to promote hospitality business, create employment and other ancillary ventures in the state.

“If the sector is developed, residents can improve their livelihood by tapping into the opportunities within the sector.”

The tourism agency boss also raised concerns over the condition of the historic Benin Moat, urging residents to stop dumping refuse in the site. She stressed that preserving the state’s cultural landmarks is essential to attracting visitors and maintaining Edo’s rich heritage.

She said, “Today, many people do not appreciate the value of the moats. The outside world understands the importance of preserving tourist sites, and we want our people to have the same understanding.

“There will be stiff penalties for anyone caught disposing of waste in the moats. We must preserve our heritage and restore the legacy of the moats.”

Elabor noted that many of the state’s tourism destinations remain untapped despite their potential to generate income, attract investment and support local businesses. She added that the government intends to leverage tourism as a key tool for boosting internally generated revenue.

“Edo State must reduce its dependence on allocations from the centre. Tourism has a critical role to play in driving economic development, and we are determined to make Edo a leading tourism destination,” she added.

She explained that the summit, themed ‘Edo Tourism: The New Frontier Exhibition and Fashion Show’, is designed to showcase the state’s cultural heritage while promoting tourism and creative enterprise.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration and Supplies, Kushe Ojekhoa, said participants in the fashion show would be rewarded, while winners would receive cash prizes as part of efforts to encourage creativity and support emerging talents in the state.
