EFCC secures more OOPL fraud convictions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday secured the conviction of three more internet fraudsters arrested at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Lagos, convicted the defendants—Adenekan Ayinde, Oyatokun Qudus, and Adisa Okikiade—after they pleaded guilty to charges filed against them.

Their convictions bring the total number of those sentenced from the OOPL sting operation to seven, following the earlier conviction of four suspects on Friday, 15 August. The EFCC said it would continue prosecuting the remaining suspects in batches.

The three men were among 93 persons arrested on 10 August during a sting operation at a hotel within the OOPL premises, where they had gathered for a pool party to celebrate their cybercrimes.

Ayinde admitted to posing as a white American woman on Google to defraud victims. He confirmed that ₦200,000 had already been restituted, while the court admitted his iPhone 14 Pro Max as evidence. Justice Dipeolu sentenced him to one month in prison, with an option of a ₦300,000 fine.

Qudus also posed online as a white woman, using an Instagram account under the name “Eric Melissa.” He pleaded guilty and received the same sentence—one month’s imprisonment, or a ₦300,000 fine.

Okikiade, who impersonated “Anthony Krenn” on Google for fraudulent purposes, pleaded guilty as well and was convicted with a similar sentence.

The EFCC confirmed that more suspects from the OOPL raid would face trial in the coming days.
