Egypt protests Ethiopia’s GERD inauguration

Egypt lodged a formal protest with the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday over Ethiopia’s inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), condemning the move as a “unilateral measure that violates international law”.

In a letter to the Council, Cairo accused Addis Ababa of seeking to provide “a false cover of acceptance and legitimacy” for the dam, according to a statement from Egypt’s foreign ministry.

The ministry said Egypt reserves the right to take “all measures permitted under international law and the UN Charter” to protect “the existential interests of its people”.
