Ex-FCT senator Aduda resigns from PDP, cites party crisis

Former senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Philip Aduda, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing to internal crises within the party.

Aduda conveyed his decision in a letter dated March 17, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman in Karu Ward, Abuja, stating that his resignation takes immediate effect due to ongoing disputes in the party.

In the letter titled ‘Notice of resignation of my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party’, he wrote, “I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect due to the crisis in the party.

“I remain grateful for the opportunity the party gave me to serve in various elective positions in our nation.

“Please, accept the assurances of my high esteem.”

His exit adds to a growing trend of defections that have significantly altered the composition of the Senate.

Recently, three PDP senators — Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North), Aminu Iya Abbas (Adamawa Central), and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara North) — defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), boosting its numbers to 84 senators.

As a result, the PDP’s representation in the Senate has dropped from 17 to 14 members.

In a related development, five PDP senators have also switched allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has now emerged as the leading opposition party in the Senate with nine members.
