Ex-Labour Party governorship candidate, Moghalu resigns party membership

The former Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has resigned from the party.

Moghalu announced his decision in a letter dated 26 January 2026, which he shared on his X handle on Tuesday. He addressed the letter to the Chairman of Ward 1 of the Labour Party in Uruagu, Nnewi, and stated that the resignation took immediate effect.

In the letter, he conveyed his family’s goodwill and formally notified the party of his decision to leave. He also expressed gratitude to the Labour Party for giving him the opportunity to contest the 2025 Anambra State governorship election on its platform. Moghalu requested that his regards be passed on to party members and signed off as “Ohamadike Na Nnewi”.

Before joining the Labour Party in October 2024, Moghalu was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he served as National Auditor. He previously held the position of Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority between 2019 and 2023.

Moghalu resigned from the APC in August 2024, citing personal reasons and the need for a better platform to pursue his governorship ambition. He later secured the Labour Party’s governorship ticket in April 2025.

At the Anambra governorship election held on 8 November 2025, Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) defeated Moghalu and other candidates to secure a second term as governor. Moghalu subsequently rejected the election outcome, describing the process as a scam and alleging widespread vote-buying and electoral irregularities.
