A former Minister of Education and Petroleum, Professor Jibril Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85.
The esteemed diplomat, cardiologist, and statesman died in Abuja on Thursday following a prolonged illness.
A funeral prayer is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today at the Abuja National Mosque, after which his remains will be transported to Yola and subsequently to Song Local Government Area in Adamawa State for burial.
A renowned medical scholar, Prof. Aminu graduated as the best student from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, in 1965, earning his medical degree from the University of Ibadan. He later obtained a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, in 1972.
Throughout his remarkable career, Prof. Aminu held numerous prestigious positions, including:
- Minister of Education and later Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989–1992).
- Ambassador to the United States (1999–2003).
- Senator representing Adamawa Central (2003–2011).
- Delegate to the National Constitutional Conference (1994–1995).
As Petroleum Minister, he was elected President of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation in 1991 and served as President of the OPEC Conference from 1991 to 1992.
Professor Aminu’s life was defined by his commitment to public service, diplomacy, and academic excellence, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
