Ex-Ukraine Speaker Parubiy shot dead

A former Ukrainian parliamentary speaker, Andriy Parubiy, was shot dead on Saturday in the western city of Lviv, officials confirmed.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing as a “horrific murder” and pledged a full investigation.

Police reported that Parubiy, 54, “died on the spot from his injuries”. They said officers were hunting the gunman, though the motive for the attack remained unclear.

Parubiy, who served as speaker of parliament between 2016 and 2019, was a leading figure in Ukraine’s pro-European movements. He played a prominent role in both the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2014 Maidan Revolution.
