EXCLUSIVE: One feared dead as 40ft container-laden truck collapses on SUV at Abule Egba [Photos/Video]

There was pandemonium on Thursday night at Charity axis of the Old Abeokuta Road, Abule Egba, Agege, Lagos when an overturned 40-feet Mack container-laden truck collapsed on a Toyota Highlander SUV causing instant traffic gridlock on both lanes of the road, NewsClick Nigeria can authoritatively report. 

 

NewsClick Nigeria gathered that the accident which occurred around 9pm Thursday night in front of First Royal Filing Station was promptly brought under control by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) Rescue Team and those of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

According to LASTMA officials, one male casualty was recovered from the SUV and rushed to a nearby hospital.

“The accident happened around 9pm on Thursday night. We were immediately dispatched here after the distress call. A truck fell on an SUV and that led to immediate blockage of both lanes that extended till about noon on Friday (today) before we were able to clear and open the road to traffic. We earlier diverted traffic to other adjoining roads. Colleagues from the Police and sister agencies were all on ground too, ,” a LASTMA official told NewsClick Nigeria

An eyewitness who identified himself as Bayo said the male casualty and driver of the SUV was returning from the airport where he gone to pick his son had been residing abroad for years when the sad incident happened.

“The man was said to be returning from the airport where he had gone to pick his son who had travelled abroad for over seven years. It took over three hours after the accident before he was retrieved from the debris. The accident led to massive gridlock leaving commuters and motorists stranded. The driver of the truck absconded immediately the accident happened,” Bayo explained.

Meanwhile, the obstructing vehicles has since been removed and normalcy returned to the axis.
