Explosion at Ukrainian station kills four

A man set off an explosive device at a railway station in northern Ukraine on Friday, killing three people and later dying from his injuries, officials reported.

The victims — a border guard and two female civilians — were struck during a document check on a platform next to a train, Ukraine’s border service said.

“The explosion happened during a document check in a controlled border area at Ovruch railway station,” the service said on social media.

The 23-year-old man died while being treated in an ambulance. Ukrainian media suggested he detonated a grenade, but a spokesperson for the interior ministry said the type of device had not been confirmed.

Images from the scene shared by the National Police of Ukraine showed rescuers aiding casualties at the station in Ovruch, Zhytomyr region.

The border service added that the man had recently been detained for attempting to cross the state border illegally in the country’s western region.
