FCT Police issues warning against illegal detention, extortion by officers

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a strict warning to all officers against “illegal detention, meddling in civil matters, especially land disputes, and extortion.”

This directive comes in response to complaints about the unlawful detention of suspects for bailable offences, extortion of both complainants and suspects, and police involvement in civil matters. The CP described such conduct as a breach of constitutional rights and contrary to the directives of the Inspector-General of Police.

In a statement released over the weekend in Abuja by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the CP directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to conduct an immediate review of all detainees and ensure that those held for minor, bailable offences are released promptly following proper documentation and verification of sureties.

CP Adewale stressed that “bail is free,” warning that any officer caught collecting money for bail or documentation would face strict disciplinary measures.

He also reiterated that “the police must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land-related disputes,” which are outside the jurisdiction of the Force.

“Any officer in violation and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive will be held accountable. The CP also condemned the demand for payment before investigating cases, warning that such acts constitute extortion and abuse of office. Offenders will be prosecuted,” the statement read.

The Command also cautioned the public not to offer bribes to officers, as this is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Additionally, citizens were advised not to involve the police in debt recovery or personal disputes.

Residents of the FCT were encouraged to support the Command’s ongoing efforts to promote professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.

Reports of police misconduct can be directed to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) via 08107314192.
