FEC approves $2.99bn rail projects for Lagos, Kano, Kaduna

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved contracts valued at $2.99 billion for three major rail projects in Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna states.

Speaking after the council’s weekly meeting in Abuja, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the approvals reflect the federal government’s focus on infrastructure that boosts productivity, economic growth, and quality of life.

Oyedele also disclosed that the council set up a presidential power sector task force to be chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

“Council today approved the award of contracts for three transformative rail projects. One is the Lagos green line rail project, phase one,” the minister said.

“The second is the Kano state metro city rail project. And the third is the Kaduna state light rail project,” he said.

He explained that the projects will be funded through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) on behalf of the federal government, alongside support from other funding sources.

According to Oyedele, the initiatives are expected to improve urban transportation in key economic centres across the country.

He described Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna as strategic cities where targeted investment can yield significant impact.

“These three cities are very important and critical. All cities are important, but this is where you have your 10 percent effort yielding 90 percent results,” he said.

The Lagos green line, one of the most anticipated segments of the city’s rail network, is expected to run from Marina on Lagos Island through the Lekki corridor and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Kano metro rail and Kaduna light rail projects are aimed at easing congestion and boosting commercial activities in two of northern Nigeria’s major urban centres.
