FG commends Funke Akindele on box office record

The Federal Government has praised Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele for the record-breaking success of her latest film, Behind the Scenes, at the box office.

In a statement shared on its X account on Monday, the National Orientation Agency hailed Akindele’s achievement as a significant boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and a reflection of the increasing global recognition of Nigerian narratives.

The agency reported, “Behind the Scenes has officially crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making history as the first Nollywood film ever to hit the ₦2 billion mark.”

The film’s success extended beyond Nigeria, grossing over $111,256 in Canada and $190,249 across North America. “From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas — this movie had everyone locked in,” the statement added.

The NOA also pointed out that Akindele’s achievement underscores her role as the first filmmaker to secure the top spot at the African box office for three consecutive years.

The agency emphasized that Behind the Scenes’ success reflects the growing reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces Nollywood’s global appeal, calling the milestone a proud moment for the country’s cultural and creative sectors.

This official recognition comes alongside widespread praise for the 2025 film, which has not only excelled in local markets but also showcased Nollywood’s increasing international presence.

According to NEWSCLICKNG Online, Akindele made history on January 12 when Behind the Scenes became the first Nollywood film to surpass the ₦2 billion milestone at the box office.
