The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to tackle security challenges and make Nigeria safer, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians living outside the country.
Musa gave the assurance while meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Angola during the ongoing African Union meeting in Luanda.
The engagement took place on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
According to a statement released on Sunday by Musa’s Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the meeting enabled Nigerians in Angola to present their concerns directly to members of the Federal Government.
Vice President Kashim Shettima led the Nigerian delegation to the AU gathering.
Among the officials who participated in the engagement were the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa; and the Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Ambassador Maxy Ogbede.
Musa praised the Nigerian community for its cordial relationship with the country’s diplomatic mission and said President Bola Tinubu remained determined to address security threats affecting different parts of the country.
According to him, the government is investing in personnel and equipment to improve the effectiveness of the military and other security agencies.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework.
“Some of our ongoing challenges stem from regional instability in the Sahel, which trickles across our borders.
“However, comprehensive border management measures are actively being implemented to curb these incursions.”
He further explained that the government was making greater use of reliable data in shaping security policies and national development programmes.
Musa said the administration remained committed to achieving lasting peace and stability across the country.
Tunji-Ojo, in his contribution, pointed to recent improvements in the country’s identity management and data protection systems.
He also said stronger cooperation between government agencies had begun to deliver tangible results in addressing security and administrative challenges.
Dabiri-Erewa assured Nigerians in the diaspora that NiDCOM would continue to respond to their needs and provide assistance where necessary.
She said the commission would also continue working towards creating opportunities through which Nigerians abroad could contribute to the country’s economic and national development.
The meeting was part of the Federal Government’s engagement with Nigerians living abroad during the AU summit in Angola.
