FG hails Super Eagles for AFCON bronze, praises ‘Nigeria’s rich football tradition’

The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles following their third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the achievement as evidence of the team’s dedication and “Nigeria’s rich football tradition”.

In a statement issued late Saturday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, congratulated the team on securing the bronze medal at the tournament.

“Congratulations, Super Eagles. On behalf of the Federal Government and all Nigerians, I congratulate you on winning the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations,” Mohammed said.

“Your performance throughout the tournament was a source of pride and joy for our nation. You have upheld Nigeria’s rich football tradition with heart, skill, and resilience.

“From the group stages to the final whistle in Casablanca, you showed courage, unity, and belief in one another. You didn’t just play; you inspired millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.”

Nigeria sealed the bronze medal after a tense penalty shootout victory over Egypt, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as the standout performer.

The Chippa United shot-stopper saved two decisive penalties, denying Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush, as Nigeria claimed their ninth AFCON bronze medal.

The third-place encounter ended goalless after regulation time before Ademola Lookman converted the winning spot-kick, capitalising on Nwabali’s heroics to secure the win in Casablanca.

Mohammed said the result further enriches Nigeria’s legacy at Africa’s premier football tournament.

“The way you competed, especially against strong teams, showed discipline and an unbroken fighting spirit,” he said.

“To our coaches, support staff, and every player who wore the green and white jersey, thank you for your dedication and sacrifice. You faced challenges with determination and gave your best on every pitch.”

Despite losing to Morocco in a dramatic semi-final penalty shootout, the minister noted that “this bronze medal is earned with dignity and effort”.

“It belongs not only to you but to every Nigerian who cheered, believed, and stood by you throughout this competition,” he added.

With the latest success, Nigeria now holds the record for the highest number of bronze medals at the AFCON with nine and remains unbeaten in all third-place matches in the tournament’s history.
