PSG beat Tottenham to win first Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain edged past Tottenham Hotspur 4–3 on penalties to claim the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, after mounting a dramatic late comeback to draw 2–2 in normal time.

The European champions opened their season by securing more silverware. Gonçalo Ramos headed in an equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time, before Nuno Mendes scored the decisive spot-kick to deliver PSG’s first Super Cup triumph.

Tottenham, in their first competitive match under new manager Thomas Frank, looked poised to lift the trophy when they led 2–0 shortly after the break in Udine, Italy. Micky van de Ven put last season’s Europa League winners ahead in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the lead three minutes into the second half.

PSG substitutes inspired the fightback. Lee Kang-in struck in the 85th minute, and Ramos levelled deep into injury time. In the shoot-out, Vitinha missed PSG’s opening kick, but new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel failed to hit the target. Mendes kept his nerve to seal victory.

Spurs’ scorers from the spot – Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro – proved insufficient as Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, Lee, and finally Mendes found the net for PSG.

This marks the first time a French club has lifted the Super Cup, taking PSG’s 2025 trophy haul to five. Luis Enrique’s side will now begin their Ligue 1 campaign away to Nantes on Sunday, while Spurs face Burnley at home in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

PSG’s win follows their historic maiden Champions League triumph in May, when they thrashed Inter Milan 5–0 in the most one-sided final in the competition’s history – a result that crowned over a decade of Qatari investment and confirmed Enrique’s youthful squad as Europe’s most exciting force.
