FG mourns Niger boat tragedy victims

The Federal Government has expressed sorrow over the deaths of at least 30 people in a boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed condolences to the victims’ families, the Niger State Government, and the people of the state.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy. The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will support victims’ families and survivors, working closely with the Niger State Government to ensure prompt relief and assistance,” he said.

Idris commended the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for swiftly rescuing and accounting for all passengers on the ill-fated boat.

He urged passengers to prioritise safety on inland waterways by wearing life jackets, stressing that such precautions could mean the difference between life and death.

The minister also disclosed that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) would launch a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness on safety measures for water travel.

The wooden boat, carrying about 138 passengers, capsized on Tuesday along the Shagunu–Dunga axis of Kainji Lake.

Idris concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wishing survivors a quick recovery.
