A fire outbreak on Wednesday night affected part of the Idu Train Station in Abuja, destroying some electrical components but leaving no fatalities.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), which confirmed the incident on Thursday, said the fire had been contained and would not disrupt train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna route.
According to the NRC Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the incident occurred in the station’s low-voltage electrical room.
Unyimadu disclosed that the fire started at about 8:30 p.m. on September 9 and was quickly put out by maintenance workers.
He said an initial assessment revealed damage to some power supply cables linked to the station’s control panels.
The NRC spokesman noted that the station’s backup solar power system was spared from the incident.
He also said electricity had been temporarily restored to the lifts and escalators, with five out of the six facilities now functioning.
“Importantly, the incident has no effect on Abuja-Kaduna Train Service operations, and scheduled train services will continue as normal,” Unyimadu stated.
He added that the NRC technical team was carrying out a detailed assessment to establish the cause of the fire and ensure the affected installations were permanently restored.
Unyimadu further disclosed that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had been notified and requested to provide the required technical assistance.
