A fire outbreak at Purple Crown Hotel, Balogun Street, along Awolowo Road, Ikeja, Lagos, has been contained by emergency responders, with no casualties recorded.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying the incident was reported at about 9:52am.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the fire affected a room on the first floor of the hotel.
LASEMA’s Tiger Squad, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police, arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the distress call.
“Upon arrival, responders discovered that a room on the first floor of the hotel had been severely affected by fire,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault within the affected room.
The incident caused significant fire and smoke damage to part of the building.
However, no death or injury was recorded as all hotel guests and staff were safely evacuated to a designated muster point.
A roll call was also conducted under the supervision of emergency responders and police officers to account for all occupants and confirm their safety.
The fire was subsequently brought under control and completely extinguished through the joint efforts of the emergency agencies.
“The joint operation focused on containing the fire, preventing further spread to adjoining rooms, and ensuring the safety of both occupants and responders,” the LASEMA permanent secretary said.
Following the incident, access to the entire building was restricted as a precaution because of the extent of the fire and smoke damage.
The affected section of the hotel remains cordoned off pending a detailed structural and electrical integrity assessment by the relevant authorities.
LASEMA said normal operations at the facility would only resume after clearance from safety officials.
Oke-Osanyintolu commended the emergency responders for their speed, professionalism and inter-agency collaboration, saying their swift intervention prevented the fire from escalating and helped protect lives and property.
He urged hotel operators, facility managers and business owners to prioritise regular electrical maintenance, install and maintain fire suppression equipment, and ensure that staff are properly trained on emergency evacuation procedures.
He also advised members of the public to promptly report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
