Fire outbreak destroys 26 shops in Lagos

A fire outbreak has destroyed about 26 shops at Bariga Market in Lagos.

The incident began in one wooden shop before spreading rapidly to others due to the wooden partitions used in constructing the stalls.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire occurred at 0405hrs on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

In a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA explained that it activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from its Onipanu Base immediately after receiving the distress call.

LASEMA stated, “Upon arrival at 0425 hours at the incident scene, it was observed that some key-clamp shops at Bariga market were engulfed by fire.”

The agency added that while the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, findings revealed that it started in one shop and spread quickly because the stalls were supported and partitioned with wooden frameworks.

The fire was eventually extinguished through the joint efforts of emergency responders, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the market.

According to LASEMA, “The fire affected twenty-six (26) key-clamp shops within the market with properties worth millions of naira lost to the fire.”

Fire outbreaks have become a recurring challenge in Lagos, often resulting in severe damages and, in some cases, loss of lives.”
