Firestorm engulfs Kano market, destroys shops

A fire incident has caused significant damage to businesses and property in Kano State after flames swept through a section of Murtala Mohammed Way in Fagge Local Government Area on Thursday night.

The fire reportedly broke out at the popular Takumbo Market, a hub for salvaged goods, before extending to nearby commercial structures close to First City Monument Bank.

The Kano State Fire Service said it received an emergency alert late in the evening and immediately mobilised firefighters from its headquarters and other stations within the metropolis to battle the blaze.

By the time emergency crews arrived, a large commercial complex and surrounding buildings had already been overtaken by fire. Several goods and business assets were lost as the flames spread across the area.

Among the affected properties were sections of the Kanawa Building and stores operated by TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited, which sustained varying degrees of damage.

Authorities believe an electrical fault triggered the incident.

Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to prioritise fire prevention measures.

“Members of the public should take all necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks. Electrical installations should be properly maintained and safety measures strictly observed,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of reporting fire emergencies without delay.

“We appeal to the public to immediately alert the Fire Service whenever there is a fire outbreak. Early reporting helps to minimise damage and save lives and property,” he added.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded from the incident, according to officials.
