Foreign powers backing terrorists in Nigeria – Sheikh Gumi

Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Mahmoud Gumi has voiced renewed concerns about what he believes to be the covert role of powerful foreign nations in Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service monitored by our correspondent in Kaduna, Sheikh Gumi suggested that the pattern of recent attacks indicates external backing for armed groups operating within the country.

He argued that developments on the ground contradict earlier signs of improved security. He cited the Abuja–Kaduna highway—which had previously been considered extremely dangerous—explaining that the route had become significantly safer before the latest wave of violence.

The cleric also referenced the situation in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, noting that farmers who had long fled their farmlands due to ongoing threats had gradually returned, showing that the security atmosphere had stabilised before the recent escalation.

Gumi said the sudden decline in progress is troubling and raises serious questions.

He urged the Nigerian government to reinforce intelligence efforts, deepen diplomatic outreach, and closely examine any external connections that may be contributing to the growing insecurity.
