Former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has stated that he is leaving the Nigerian military with a “clear conscience,” affirming that he gave his utmost in service to the nation.
General Musa, who handed over to General Olufemi Oluyede as the new CDS, made the remark on Friday in Abuja during his pull-out parade.
Reflecting on his decades-long military career, he described it as one defined by commitment and honour.
“As I hang up my uniform today, I do so with a clear conscience, knowing that I gave my very best. I leave with fond memories of camaraderie — of battles fought and victories shared as one family,” he told the audience.
“The sound of the bugle may change for me, but the soldier’s heart beats on forever,” he added.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, urging officers and men of the Armed Forces to extend their full support to the newly appointed service chiefs.
“I may be retiring from active military service today, but I am by no means retiring from my love for our dear country, Nigeria,” he said. “I remain a soldier at heart and a patriot ever loyal to the constitution and sovereignty of our great nation. Once again, I thank Mr President for the privilege of serving as the Chief of Defence Staff for over two years. It has been a great honour, and I do not take it for granted.”
Reiterating the importance of unity among security agencies, General Musa called on Nigerians to support and pray for the nation’s troops and security operatives combating insecurity.
“No single institution or organisation can win this war alone,” he emphasised. “We must synergise, collaborate, and fight together. I appeal to all Nigerians to continue praying for our troops and security forces so that together, we can triumph and see Nigeria continue to progress.”
President Tinubu recently restructured the military hierarchy, appointing Olufemi Oluyede — formerly Chief of Army Staff — as the new CDS. The reshuffle also saw Waidi Shaibu named Chief of Army Staff alongside new heads for the Air Force and Navy.
The Senate confirmed the appointments earlier this week, and President Tinubu decorated the new service chiefs with their ranks on Thursday.
