Former IG quits APC following governorship primary defeat

Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has formally withdrawn his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing dissatisfaction with the party’s governorship primary process in Nasarawa State.

Adamu tendered his resignation letter on Monday to APC ward executives in Makama Ward, Lafia, bringing an end to his association with the ruling party as he pursues his political ambition through another platform.

Explaining his decision, he said, “Today I address my letter to you the ward executives especially the ward chairman of my decision to resign from the All Progressives Congress with immediate effect.

“This decision was not taken lightly however, recent developments within the party especially the conduct of the governorship primary election processes in Nasarawa State have made it difficult for me to continue with my political activities under the platform of the party.”

The former police chief expressed concern over what he described as a lack of internal democracy in the party’s conduct of the primary election.

“I strongly believe that internal democracy, fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for aspirants and members guide the affairs of any democratic political party.

“Unfortunately the event surrounding the primary election did not reflect this principle and have led to loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and the processes in the state.”

Following consultations with his supporters, associates and family members, Adamu said he had resolved to continue his political journey elsewhere.

“After wide consultations with supporters, political associates and family members, I have decided to withdraw my membership to pursue my political aspirations through another platform,” he noted.

Despite his exit, Adamu expressed gratitude to party members at the ward, local government and state levels for the support and cooperation he received during his time in the APC.

“kindly accept this letter as my formal resignation from the party,” he added.

Adamu had earlier signalled his intention to contest the 2027 Nasarawa governorship election. In April, Musa Hussein, Director-General of the Mohammed Abubakar Adamu 2027 Political Movement, announced that the former IGP had obtained the APC expression of interest and nomination forms and remained confident of securing the party’s ticket despite the endorsement of Senator Ahmed Wadada by the state governor.
