Four individuals have died in a tragic road accident that occurred along G. U. Ake Road in Rivers State.
According to police reports, the incident took place around midnight on Monday, when the driver of a Toyota Camry, bearing registration number ABJ 10 EM, lost control of the vehicle and struck a group of pedestrians.
Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed in a statement that four of the six pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene.
“One Benson Peter Michael, male, aged 36, and driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number ABJ 10 EM, lost control and collided with six pedestrians,” the statement read.
“Tragically, four of them died at the scene, while the remaining two sustained injuries and were rushed to BMH Hospital for treatment.”
The driver has since been taken into custody, and the vehicle involved has been recovered and moved to the police station.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) Mortuary.
The case will be handed over to the State Traffic Department for further investigation.
“The Command deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and assures the public that justice will be pursued,” Iringe-Koko added.
