The remaining four students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, who were abducted from their residence on June 2, have regained their freedom.
The students, comprising three males and one female, were reportedly rescued late on Wednesday by the Department of State Services (DSS) during an intelligence-led operation “without the payment of any ransom”.
One suspected kidnapper was arrested during the operation, while others were reportedly killed.
The students were among seven undergraduates abducted when gunmen attacked their residence in the Low-Cost area of Kaura Namoda.
Following the incident, Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, had told TheCable that one of the students escaped during the attack, leaving six in captivity.
“The school premises have been fortified with adequate security personnel, making it extremely difficult for bandits to penetrate,” he said.
“One of the students went outside during the night, claiming he wanted to urinate. In the process, he left the door open. Coincidentally, bandits passing through the area entered the house and abducted the students.”
Abubakar said operatives from the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in collaboration with troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, launched a coordinated operation to track the kidnappers and rescue the victims.
Two of the six students were earlier released, while “sustained intelligence-led operations by security agencies” led to the rescue of the remaining four on Wednesday.
