The Lagos State Government has consistently restated its zero-tolerance policy toward indiscriminate waste dumping and markets that violate environmental regulations.
The government has repeatedly cautioned residents, communities, market operators, and private enterprises to comply with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, particularly regarding illegal waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways.
Despite these warnings, some individuals and markets continue to flout the regulations. In enforcing compliance with the state’s environmental laws, the government has maintained that it will not hesitate to shut down markets found in violation.
On Sunday, the Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure of the Ladipo Spare Parts Market located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) due to repeated environmental breaches, including unlawful dumping of refuse on the highway median and illegal street trading.
This action is not unprecedented, as the Ladipo Spare Parts Market was similarly shut down in 2023 for related environmental offences.
The Ladipo Spare Parts Market is not the only Lagos market that has been closed over this issue. Many other markets in Lagos have suffered similar fates in the past.
