The Ghanaian government has resolved to rename the international airport in the capital, reverting it from Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.
A statement from the transport ministry explained that implementing the name change will require the systematic updating of official records, statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, aviation publications, and digital platforms.
“The government has considered it appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name,” the statement said.
It added that the original name, Accra International Airport (ACC), has remained the official designation in documents of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
The airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 to honor Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who was killed during a failed coup attempt in 1967 at a location that now serves as the airport’s forecourt.
