Gombe recorded 72 road deaths, 171 crashes in six months – FRSC

The Gombe State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps says no fewer than 72 deaths were recorded in 171 road crashes involving 1156 people in the state between January and June 2025.

The Gombe Sector Commander stated this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe.

Kaura said that 641 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 443 went home unhurt.

According to him, 6.23 per cent of the passengers involved in the crashes in the period under review died, 55.45 per cent sustained injuries, and 38.32 per cent went home without injuries.

He said that 234 vehicles were involved in the crashes, comprising 105 bicycles and tricycles, representing 44.87 per cent of the total vehicles involved.

Breaking down the statistics, Kaura said 18 passengers were killed in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, while 16 died in June.

He attributed the suspected causes of the crashes to over-speeding, dangerous driving, route violation and over-loading, among others.

He berated the attitude of some drivers in the state for not obeying traffic rules and maintaining the recommended speed limit.

The sector commander advised motorists to always check their vehicles before putting them on the roads.

“Now we are in the rainy season, drivers must be careful not to overspeed because the roads are slippery and wet.

“Ensure good visibility by fixing whatever impedes good visibility while driving; if possible drive less at night,” he said.
