Gov Fubara arrives Port Harcourt airport

The governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara has arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

The governor’s aircraft landed at about 11:55am on Friday.

Supporters of the governor were present to receive him.

Fubara had not resumed at his government house office hours after President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule imposed on the state.

On Thursday, the Rivers house of assembly reconvened, with hundreds of Fubara’s loyalists besieging the government house in anticipation of his return, but their wait was in vain.

Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, had been under suspension since Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18, following a deepening political crisis.

Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired admiral, as sole administrator to oversee the state during the emergency.

In a state broadcast on Wednesday, Ibas handed back power and urged political stakeholders in Rivers to embrace dialogue and mutual respect.

The crisis in the state arose from a rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), over control of Rivers’ political structure.

This feud divided members of the Rivers assembly and escalated into violent clashes.

In June, Tinubu convened a reconciliation meeting with Fubara, Wike, Martin Amaewhule, and other key figures.

Subsequently, in July, Ibas inaugurated the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), led by Michael Odey.

The commission went ahead to conduct local government elections across the 23 councils on August 30.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victory in 20 councils, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in three.”
