VP Shettima heads to Addis Ababa for UN food summit

Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Sunday left Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent Nigeria at the second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS).

The summit, taking place from July 27 to 29, will bring together global leaders to review progress since the inaugural 2021 event and to accelerate efforts toward establishing resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications (office of the vice-president), Shettima will take part in high-level dialogues, including a major session on transforming the global coffee value chain.

He is also slated to participate in ministerial roundtables covering public finance, trade, and responsible investment, in addition to attending various side events such as field visits, networking opportunities, and knowledge-sharing forums.

“At a recent briefing by the Task Force on the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit, VP Shettima had outlined three key objectives for Nigeria’s delegation: positioning Nigeria as a leader of thought on African food systems reform, leveraging international partnerships aligned with domestic priorities, and advancing a private sector-led model for continental food transformation @SDGaction, @GlobalGoalsUN,” the statement reads.

“The summit is organised in collaboration with the United Nations, the governments of Ethiopia and Italy.”

Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements at the summit.
