‘Gwo, Gwo, Gwo, Ngwo’ crooner, Mike Ejeagha dies at 95, Governor Mbah mourns

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has mourned the passing of legendary highlife musician ‘Gentleman’ Mike Ejeagha, describing his death as a profound loss to Enugu, Nigeria, and the global music community.

Governor Mbah said Ejeagha’s death had left a void too large to fill, noting that his gentle nature and iconic music earned him admiration across international borders.

Responding to the news of Ejeagha’s death, which surfaced on Friday evening, Mbah pledged that the state government would further honour the late folklorist’s legacy.

During Ejeagha’s lifetime, Mbah had already taken steps to celebrate his contributions by reconstructing the well-known Obinagu Road and the adjoining Chief Mike Ejeagha Crescent, which leads directly to the singer’s Abakpa Nike residence—an unfulfilled wish from previous administrations. He also renamed Obinagu Road in the icon’s honour.

Taking to his verified social media platforms, Mbah expressed his sorrow, writing:

“I am profoundly saddened by the death of music icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. He was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State.

“Mike Ejeagha stood among the finest musicians of his era. His humility and down-to-earth nature stood in sharp contrast to his celebrity status. I will forever treasure the moments I shared with him – his warmth, wisdom, and ability to find joy in the ordinary.”

Mbah described Ejeagha’s music as timeless, rooted in traditional folktales that continue to resonate across generations and cultures. He noted that Ejeagha’s fan base spanned beyond Nigeria, making him one of the most recognisable voices in African music.

“His death creates a huge vacuum. Yet, the legacy he leaves behind will endure,” Mbah added.

The governor extended his condolences to the Ejeagha family and pledged the support of the Enugu State government.

“We will ensure his memory is preserved and celebrated appropriately. Above all, I pray that his family finds strength and comfort in God’s love.”
