[HEALTH TIPS]: Six antioxidant-rich drinks you should try

Antioxidants help protect your cells and reduce inflammation in the body. Drinks like green tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and certain juices are rich in these beneficial compounds and can be enjoyed in different ways to support your health.

With so many beverages lining store shelves today, from flavored waters to nutrient packed sparkling drinks, choosing the rdight option can feel overwhelming. Still, many traditional drinks that have stood the test of time remain some of the best sources of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are natural compounds that defend the body against free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to disease. These harmful molecules can form inside the body or come from environmental exposure such as pollution and smoke. When they build up, they may lead to serious health concerns.

The good part is that antioxidants are found in many healthy foods and drinks including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and several beverages. Adding them to your routine can help strengthen your body’s defenses.

Here are some top antioxidant rich drinks to include in your diet

1. Green tea

Tea is one of the most widely consumed drinks in the world and has been enjoyed for generations. “When it comes to antioxidant drinks, green tea stands out as my top choice,” says Erin Davis, M.S., RDN, CDCES, a registered dietitian and diabetes care and education specialist. “The plant compounds in green tea, especially catechins, are well-studied and have been found to reduce blood sugar, protect the nervous system and have anti-cancer properties.”

Whether served hot or cold, adding a squeeze of lemon may help improve how well your body absorbs its antioxidants.

2. Pomegranate Juice

This deep red juice comes from a fruit native to regions like Iran and India. It is a favourite among nutrition experts because of its rich antioxidant content. “One hundred percent pomegranate juice is made by pressing the entire fruit into juice so you get the polyphenols from the rind, pith and arils to optimize its potential antioxidant benefits,” says Spano.

It can be enjoyed on its own or added to smoothies and mocktails.

3. Grape Juice

If you want the benefits linked to red wine without alcohol, grape juice is a great option. “Not a huge red wine fan but looking for an antioxidant boost? Grape juice contains many of the same polyphenols like resveratrol that act as powerful antioxidants and help to reduce the risk of heart disease,” says Davis.

It delivers similar benefits without the downsides of alcohol.

4. Hot (and Iced) Chocolate

Cocoa based drinks are another rich source of antioxidants. The higher the cocoa content, the more benefits you get.

“Iced chocolate drinks or hot chocolate made with cocoa can help improve blood flow, boost cognitive performance and lower blood pressure when consumed regularly,” says Spano. “These benefits are due to cocoa flavanols. To get the most cocoa flavanols in cocoa powder, choose a powder that is non-alkalized cocoa not Dutch processed.”

You can enjoy it warm or prepare a chilled version with milk and ice.

5. Coffee

Many people rely on coffee to start their day, and it turns out it offers more than just energy. “Your favorite morning drink may be doing more than waking you up,” says Davis. “Coffee is an excellent source of chlorogenic acid, a plant compound that has anti-diabetes, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity effects.”

To keep it healthy, avoid adding too much sugar or artificial sweeteners.

6. Orange Juice

A breakfast favorite, orange juice is packed with vitamin C along with other antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids. Spano points out that it also contains hesperidin, a compound with strong health benefits.

“Most of the hesperidin is found in the peel and membranes of the orange,” says Spano. “When oranges are pressed to make 100% orange juice, the hesperidin is extracted from the peel, pulp and membranes, making 100% orange juice one of the best food sources of hesperidin.”

It can be enjoyed fresh or used in recipes.
