How human error, excessive speed led to Abuja-Kaduna train derailment – NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has attributed the derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train to human error and overspeeding.

On August 26, the train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed, causing several coaches to tumble.

According to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), six people were injured in the incident, though no lives were lost.

In a statement issued on Monday, Kayode Opeifa, managing director of NRC, disclosed that 618 passengers were on board.

He noted that 22 of those injured are at different stages of recovery. The NRC has contacted 512 passengers, while 71 remain unreachable due to non-responsiveness, incorrect contact details, or unavailability.

Opeifa confirmed that the corporation has completed its internal probe and accepted the recommendations made. He added that NRC is awaiting reports from the ministerial committee and the NSIB before making final decisions.

He further stated that engineers had successfully re-railed and recovered all locomotives and coaches involved in the derailment. While the main track has been repaired to a safe level, work is still ongoing on the secondary track.

“Safety remains our top priority. The corporation reaffirms its determination to restore public confidence in rail services,” he said.

“Our in-house investigation revealed that the train was traveling at excessive speed, and the operator misapplied the emergency braking system.

“Management has accepted all recommendations of the investigative team and corrective measures are being implemented immediately.”
