How to access N5m Lagos business loan

Small business owners and individuals looking to start businesses in Lagos State can obtain loans ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦5 million through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), a government-backed initiative established to provide financial support to businesses, promote entrepreneurship and generate employment.
The scheme offers funding opportunities to Lagos residents who intend to launch new businesses, expand existing ventures or strengthen their business operations.

The loan opportunity was brought to public attention on Tuesday through a social media post by Qudus Akanbi Eleyi, popularly known on X as @EleyiLagos. He shared a guide outlining the various loan options, eligibility criteria and steps required to apply.

Details available on the official LSETF website indicate that qualified applicants can access different loan packages based on the size of their businesses and whether they are newly established or already operational.

However, applicants must meet the fund’s eligibility requirements, provide the necessary documentation and undergo an assessment before receiving financial support.

What is the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund?

The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund was established under the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund Law of 2016 to provide financial assistance and employment opportunities for Lagos residents.

The initiative seeks to address unemployment, improve access to business financing and encourage economic development across the state.

Through its Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Loan Programme, the fund offers financial assistance to entrepreneurs who may encounter difficulties accessing conventional bank loans.

The programme covers both existing businesses and individuals preparing to establish new enterprises.

How much can applicants borrow?

According to LSETF’s published loan guidelines, three main categories are available to eligible applicants.

The Micro Enterprise Loan provides between N50,000 and N500,000 to small business owners operating in Lagos State.

This category targets existing businesses that have operated for at least one year. Beneficiaries are expected to repay the loan within 12 months.

The Micro Enterprise Start-up Loan offers between N50,000 and N250,000 to individuals seeking to establish new businesses.

Unlike the existing business category, applicants are not required to demonstrate that their businesses have operated for a year. However, they must provide a vocational training certificate issued by a Lagos State-recognised certifying body.

The repayment period for this category is also 12 months.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Loan provides between N500,000 and N5m to established businesses.

Businesses applying under this category must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and must have operated for at least one year.

The repayment period ranges from 24 to 36 months, depending on the approved loan arrangement.

Who is eligible for an LSETF loan?

The programme is primarily available to business owners who reside and operate within Lagos State.

Applicants must also demonstrate that they meet the requirements of their preferred loan category.

For existing micro businesses, LSETF requires evidence that the enterprise has operated for at least one year.

Start-up applicants must provide proof of vocational training, while established small and medium enterprises must possess valid CAC registration documents.

Applicants are also expected to provide accurate personal and business information for verification.

Documents required for LSETF loans

Individuals applying for the Micro Enterprise Loan are generally required to provide a Lagos State Residents Registration Agency identification number or card, a Lagos State Internal Revenue Service Tax Identification Number and a valid government-issued identity card.

Other requirements include a Bank Verification Number, two passport photographs and bank statements covering the previous six months.
