“I can’t use my stage name without permission, no personal house or car “, Actor Papa Ajasco cries out

Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has spoken about the difficulties he has faced despite gaining widespread fame for portraying the iconic character Papa Ajasco.

Ayoyinka disclosed this during an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, where he explained the limitations he encounters because of the trademark ownership of the well-known character.

According to the actor, the Papa Ajasco character is legally registered by Wale Adenuga, the owner of the production company responsible for the popular comedy series.

He explained that because the character belongs to the production company, he cannot freely use the identity or costume for personal projects, advertisements, or commercial engagements without obtaining permission.

“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me,” he said.

Ayoyinka further revealed that he does not have exclusive rights to use the name or costume linked to the character.

“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume,” he added.

The actor also stated that the strong public association with the character has made it difficult for him to secure opportunities as himself, as many people only recognise him in the well-known costume and personality.

“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it,” he explained.

Ayoyinka also revealed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Government under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.

Despite his long-standing career in the entertainment industry, the veteran actor admitted that life has been challenging in recent years.

“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people,” he said.

“I’m always thinking every day. Look at my home—I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car.”

Ayoyinka is widely recognised for portraying the beloved character Papa Ajasco in the long-running Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga Productions, which became one of the most popular television shows in Nigeria.
