IATA names Keyamo among Africa’s top aviators

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has recognised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as one of Africa’s four most prominent figures in aviation.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi, during a special session at the IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In his remarks, Alawadhi attributed the recognition to Keyamo’s forward-looking policy direction, strategic reforms, and strong commitment to international aviation standards.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s effective implementation of the Cape Town Convention and the IDERA framework, alongside the country’s 91.4 per cent safety oversight rating by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which positions Nigeria among leading aviation nations on the continent.

“This recognition reflects purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and measurable progress. Nigeria’s aviation sector is clearly on a transformative path,” Alawadhi said.

He added that Keyamo’s engagement with global stakeholders and prompt resolution of longstanding industry challenges have boosted investor confidence and improved operational stability within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Other individuals honoured include Teresia Malokwe, Poppy Khosa, and Mesfin Tasew.

According to Keyamo’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the recognition reflects growing continental acknowledgement of the minister’s leadership and reforms.

He noted that Keyamo’s inclusion among the top aviation figures reinforces Nigeria’s emerging role as a key driver of aviation transformation in Africa, citing policy clarity, international collaboration, and decisive reforms as key achievements.

The recognition aligns with IATA’s objective of celebrating excellence, innovation, and impactful leadership across Africa’s aviation industry.

The Focus Africa Conference, themed “Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity and Operational Efficiency in Africa”, serves as a platform for shaping the future of aviation across the continent.

Recently, Nigeria recorded a 91.4 per cent aviation safety rating following an assessment by ICAO’s Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM), marking one of the country’s strongest performances in recent years.

The rating followed a comprehensive audit of Nigeria’s aviation agencies and airlines, assessing safety oversight and operational standards.

The achievement drew praise from President Bola Tinubu, who described it as “impressive” and noted that it enhances Nigeria’s attractiveness for investment in aviation infrastructure, maintenance, and airline operations.
