A yet to be identified driver was killed on Sunday after his vehicle loaded with yams ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Lumma-Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area.
The explosion occurred around 2 p.m. on an alternative route being used by motorists after suspected terrorists destroyed the main bridge linking Lumma-Babanna to the Benin Republic.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, who also said that another attack in the same area led to the killing of a motorcyclist, following the planting of the explosive device.
The incidents came shortly after the March 23 destruction of the Lumma-Babanna-New Bussa Bridge, which connects the region to communities in Agwara.
Security sources have linked the bridge attack to suspected terrorists believed to be operating from the nearby Kainji National Park, with the aim of disrupting security operations and easing movement in the area.
Residents say the collapse of the bridge has severely affected commercial movement between border communities and the Benin Republic, disrupting trade and everyday economic activities.
