IGP Egbetokun suspends enforcement of tinted glass permit

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice scheduled for 16th October 2025 at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.

Egbetokun made this known while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the decision was made in consideration of the concerns of Nigerians and in respect for the NBA, although the police noted that there is currently no definitive court order halting the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.

In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police confirmed that:

  • Discussions with the NBA focused on the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
  • Both parties agreed on the importance of cooperation in upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust.
  • A Police-NBA committee has been inaugurated to foster stronger collaboration between the Force and the legal community.

Meanwhile, motorists have been urged to use this grace period to update their vehicle documentation and comply with all regulations regarding tinted or shaded vehicle glass.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the police’s commitment to enforcing existing laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights while maintaining active engagement with key justice sector stakeholders.
