I’ll only join APC if my political movement is recognised – Kwankwaso

The national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, says he would only consider rejoining the All Progressives Congress (APC) if his Kwankwasiyya movement is fully recognised.

Speculation has been widespread that the former Kano governor could soon align with the ruling party.

Kwankwaso made this known at his residence in Kano on Friday while hosting Buhari Bakwana, a former political adviser to Abdullahi Ganduje, along with APC members from the state’s 44 LGAs.

“I am willing to engage with the APC, but only under a clear agreement that guarantees full recognition of my political movement, the Kwankwasiyya,” he said.

“My movement and its people are paramount to me, and I cannot abandon them for any political arrangement.”

The ex-presidential candidate recounted his contributions to the APC’s formation, alleging that he and his allies faced persecution under Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“We were among the founding fathers of the APC and endured significant persecution from various security agencies while challenging the previous administration,” he said.

“Yet when the party assumed power, we received no recognition or appreciation for our sacrifices, simply because we didn’t originate from their original faction.”

Kwankwaso also criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for “sidelining” his faction when they attempted a return, noting he was denied even a zonal chairmanship slot.

He stressed that such experiences have solidified his movement’s resolve to remain politically independent.

“We are ready to join APC under strong conditions and promises. We will not allow anyone to use us and later dump us,” he added.

Kwankwaso emphasised that his political structure has grown into a formidable force that cannot be disregarded, saying neither he nor his followers are desperate to defect from the NNPP.

“However, we remain open to genuine partnerships with any party willing to honour the agreement and treat us as equal partners,” he said.

He concluded that even if the PDP seeks reconciliation, any future alliance would only be feasible with transparent and visible commitments.
