I’m not a poor politician, I’ll remain in PDP — Abba Moro

The senate minority leader, Abba Moro, has declared that he has no intention of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Moro made this known on Wednesday during a consultative meeting with the PDP national working committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Turaki, the party’s national chairman.

The PDP has experienced a wave of defections since the beginning of the year.

The lawmaker said he, alongside some other party members, are not desperate politicians and would not abandon the PDP due to intimidation or political pressure.

“I want to inform you, Mr chairman, that many of us here are not poor or desperate politicians. We are in PDP to stay. We are not in PDP for the sake of using the platform to win elections, and certainly not fixated on the 2027 elections. So, no amount of intimidating scenarios will push us out of PDP,” Moro said.

Describing the PDP as the only credible platform for democratic governance in Nigeria, the senate minority leader urged members of the newly elected NWC to collaborate with party leaders to foster unity and cohesion.

“The national convention has come and gone. So, this responsibility falls on us, especially you (national chairman) and other members of the NWC, to salvage the situation. Yours is a very herculean task,” he said.

In his response, Turaki said party leaders are committed to repositioning the PDP.

“Our goal is to save this country from anti-democratic forces and salvage our multiparty democracy. The 2027 general elections are not about defections, but about Nigerians,” he said.

Turaki praised Moro and other PDP senators for what he described as their principled position, referring to them as “pillars of the party”.

Also speaking, Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP board of trustees (BoT), congratulated the party on the successful conduct of its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo state, and pledged the BoT’s backing for the Turaki-led NWC.

“From the early days of their tenure, it appears that our party is being repositioned, structures are being strengthened, and confidence is being restored across the federation,” Wabara said.

He called for unity and reconciliation within the party, stressing that the current moment demands healing.
