Impeachment: Rivers Assembly fails to reconvene

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, did not resume plenary on Thursday, a week after adjourning its previous sitting.

Online reports that during the first 2026 sitting, held last Thursday, the House had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. The charges included the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval, among others. The sitting was adjourned to January 15, 2026.

However, as of noon on Thursday, January 15, 2026, a correspondent who visited the assembly observed no indication that the House—currently holding sittings at the conference hall of its official legislative quarters along Aba Road—would reconvene.

No reason has been given for the delay, and no new date for resumption has been announced.

Attempts to reach the House Chairman on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Eneme George, for comment were unsuccessful. He neither answered calls nor replied to messages sent to his phone at the time of filing this report.
