The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 associations have been cleared to advance to the next stage of registration as political parties.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this on Thursday after the commission’s meeting. He said INEC received 171 applications, which were assessed against the provisions of Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and Clause 2 of the Commission’s 2022 Guidelines for Political Parties.
“Out of the total applications, 14 associations met the requirements to proceed, while 157 did not,” Olumekun said. He added that INEC would formally notify all applicants within 24 hours, while the list of pre-qualified associations had already been published on its website and other official platforms.
The review formed part of the meeting that also addressed preparations for forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the end-of-tenure Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory.
