Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has thrown his support behind newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca, calling the Italian the “perfect” choice to take charge of the Premier League champions after Pep Guardiola’s exit.
Maresca was named Guardiola’s replacement after the Spaniard concluded a highly successful 10-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium. The 46-year-old officially began his reign during City’s pre-season tour, with his first game ending in a penalty shootout loss to Inter Milan in Hong Kong.
Speaking on Sunday, BBC Sport reported that Gvardiol is confident Maresca has what it takes to continue the club’s winning tradition, despite the enormous task of succeeding one of football’s most accomplished managers.
“The level is that high, and he has been chosen with reason as the manager,” Gvardiol said.
“I think he has quality, has some new ideas, and also we need to see what we are going to do with the style of play, the football we are going to play and the tactics.
“I think he is a perfect one, but of course, it takes time. It’s something totally new. It’s not easy to change the manager, so we will take time.”
The Croatia international stressed that the players also have an important responsibility in ensuring Maresca settles in quickly.
“It’s our job to help him as much as possible and also to listen and try to adapt as quick as possible,” he said.
Gvardiol further disclosed that he has already spoken with Maresca, with their conversation centred on his injury recovery and the role he played under Guardiola.
Looking back on Guardiola’s departure, the defender said the timing of the announcement felt right, noting that members of the squad had sensed the veteran coach’s decade-long spell at the club was nearing its conclusion.
Guardiola left at the end of last season after leading Manchester City to multiple domestic and international titles, paving the way for a new era under Maresca.
